What is odontotherapy?
The specialization in dental medicine that deals with the treatment of dental caries, but also with the aesthetic aspect of the treated tooth, is called odontotherapy. Simple caries, enamel defects, diseases of the hard dental substance, but also associated complications can be treated by odontotherapy.
What are dental caries? Why do we have tooth decay?
Most of the time, when we have tooth decay, we know it. Whether you can see a dark coloration on your teeth or feel pain, tooth decay left untreated can lead to complications and even tooth loss.
Pain caused by tooth decay can be triggered by eating hot, cold, sweet foods and liquids. In addition, the breath may become foul-smelling (fetid breath).
Tooth decay occurs when acids produced by bacteria in the oral cavity attack the tooth. Dental caries usually appear as a result of a combination of factors: poor oral hygiene, humidity and heat can produce favorable conditions for the appearance and harmful action of these acids. The hard component tissues of the tooth (enamel, dentin, cementum) can be destroyed by acids, which can demineralize them and weaken their resistance. Without treatment, a tooth decay can completely destroy the tooth and compromise the root.
But, fortunately, through odontotherapy, the treatment of dental caries in time can completely save the tooth.
Treatment of dental caries
The extent to which the tooth is affected by tooth decay can influence treatment. For the early phase of dental caries, treatment and brushing with fluoride is recommended.
Then, obturation is the procedure that the dentist can resort to for the treatment of the tooth affected by dental caries, but possibly saved. Obturation involves, in the first phase, the removal of the affected part, and then the total or partial reconstruction of the tooth.
When the root of the tooth is completely damaged and cannot be saved, the dentist will recommend the extraction of the tooth and the restoration of oral health by means of a dental implant or dental bridge.
Scheduling dental therapy in the DentArbre dental clinic
The moment at which the treatment of a tooth decay is carried out is very important. When the tooth is affected very little or the decay has attacked part of the tooth, but the root can be saved, the necessary treatment can be carried out that will lead to the saving of the tooth.
We recommend all our patients to carry out routine check-ups on time and to see the dentist even if they feel very little pain. The sooner tooth decay is treated, the more likely it is that the treatment will be very simple and cost-effective.
